Plants to Grow on Your Balcony in February
3 February, 2021February can be a challenging month for gardeners, as dealing with extreme temperatures and frost can hamper the growth of balcony gardens. But, despite the cold weather, there is still plenty that can be sown during this period. Some may need to be germinated indoors, whereas others can be grown and sown outdoors. Here is a full list of all the plants to grow in February on your balcony garden:
Plants to Grow in February on your Balcony Garden:
Geraniums
Geraniums are beautiful flowering plants that are perfect for adding colour to any outdoor space. They have a lovely scent and are easy to grow, making them a perfect choice for beginners. The best way to grow Geraniums in February is by propagating them from existing plants. So if you have the plant already or if you know someone who would be happy to let you use their plant to propagate your Geraniums, you’re good to go!
To propagate your Geraniums correctly, take a pot and fill it with good quality potting soil and ensure that it is moist. Mix in some sand or vermiculite to lighten the potting soil and make a one-inch-deep hole in the middle. Cut off two to three inches of your mature Geranium plant with about two to three leaves above a short, exposed stem. Take the cutting and dip it in hormone rooting powder before planting it in the pot. Leave it in a sunny spot for the plant to grow. You may want to bring it indoors when frost is expected.
Rosemary
Those wanting interesting herbs to cultivate in February should look at growing Rosemary. It is a perennial herb which means that it can be grown all year round. They are sturdy plants that can deal with low temperatures and will bloom throughout the year, ensuring a fresh supply of herbs for your kitchen.
Put your Rosemary plant in a sunny spot on your balcony, in a pot with good drainage filled with high quality potting soil. Ensure that it is sheltered so that it is not damaged by the harsh cold winter wind. If you live in a place with extremely low temperatures, you may want to bring the plant in during the winter months as the frost could harm its growth.
Winter Savoury
Winter Savoury is a herb that tastes similar to thyme and can be used in various winter meals. It has a prominent tangy flavour and is easy to grow and harvest through the winter months. The winter savoury thrives in full sun and well-drained potting soil. Ensure that your winter savoury plant gets about six to seven hours of sunlight daily. During winter they are best cultivated in seed trays indoors so that they can be transplanted outdoors once the soil is warm enough. This plant can also be grown from cuttings and might be easier to cultivate from cuttings during the month of February. The savoury plant grown in winter has a different flavour from that grown in summer.
Violas
Those looking for the perfect blooms for their balcony garden should definitely consider sowing Viola seeds in February. They come in various beautiful colours and are relatively easy to grow. To sow your Viola seeds, pick seed trays or pots filled with sowing compost and keep them indoors to start with. Once the seeds are large enough to handle, they can be moved outdoors. In your garden, pick a spot in full or partial sunlight and use a fertile soil with plenty of organic matter to ensure good growth.
Snapdragons
Snapdragon is another beautiful flowering plant to grow on your balcony garden in the month of February. These are short-lived garden perennial plants that also go by the name of lion’s mouth. Plant your snapdragons on a sunny spot on your balcony, in rich, moist and well-drained potting soil. Ensure that you choose a container with good drainage. These plants should bloom through spring and well into summer. Snapdragons are available in a variety of colours including white, yellow, pink, red, orange, peach, purple and violet.
